Your Own Working From Home Business

If you’ve done any research at all, you will have seen that there are many different ways to earn money as a WAHM - and in today’s technological age a good number of them are online.

However, many millions of M0ms every day are starting their own working from home business - from scratch - without franchises, party plans or any input at all. Although profitable home based businesses will usually have some sort of internet presence it does not have to be all online!

In general there are two distinct categories of working from home business:

Selling a product

Your product could be anything! ebooks, jewelry, diaper cakes, soap… to name but a few. When you are selling a product your customer is getting something tangible from you.

So what product to you have (or could you have) to sell?

Buy from a wholesaler and sell on to your customers?
Do you already have a hobby that can be turned into a profitable home based business? Can you make soap? Or jewelry? Or scented candles? Or do you have an eye for design which means you could produce beautiful gift baskets?
Or is there something you could start producing? After you have done a bit of market research you may have discovered that no-one seems to be selling stuff for baby showers in your area - could you start making baby baskets or diaper cakes?

Be aware

Some products have strict government guidelines regarding their sales: children’s toys for example need the correct hallmark tobe sold safely; soaps and other cosmetics need to be clearly labelled with the contents (and records kept of the correctmeasurements in every batch); if you are making any sort of foods you can expect a visit from the food hygiene people… All these things are easy to overcome, but you do need to do the research and get your head around the paperwork before you startor it could come as an (expensive) shock later to put it right.

Selling a Service

What can you do for other people that they are willing to pay for? Many very profitable home based businesses are service based.

What you like doing? Do you enjoy animals? In which case can you start a dog walking business? Or look after small pets while their owners are on holiday?
What did you do BC (Before Children)? Can you start a working from home business putting your qualifications and experience back into action? Book-keeping? Accounting? Interior design? One to one tutoring? Secretarial skills? (If you live near a University or College, students are often willing to pay for someone to word process their final thesis or dissertation)
Are you in a position where you could invest in some training? Possibly a correspondance or online course that you can complete from home? If you can start a profitable home based business after the training it would be a very worthwhile investment. From aromatherapy - nutrition - keep fit instructors/personal trainers - proof-readers: there is training out there on every subject under the sun.

So don’t sit there thinking “I would love to start my own working from home business doing…(fill in the blank)” - at least investigate the options and see how much it would cost to qualify yourself!

Again, you will need to do some market research before you start. Other people might have had the same amazing idea as you and it may need tweaking a bit. But go for it!
